Pool Games
Sharks and Minnows PDF  | Print |  E-mail

Generally Sharks and Minnows is played in the deep end of a large pool. The game starts out with one person selected as the shark and the rest as the minnows.

The shark starts in the water on one side of the pool and the minnows usually start on the deck of the other side (if they are playing in water deep enough to dive into). The game starts by the shark calling out "Sharks and Minnows, one two three, fishies, fishies swim to me!", "Cross my ocean!", or some variant of such phrase, at which point the minnows may begin to dive in to swim to the other wall. If the shark manages to tag a minnow while before he touches the wall, then that minnow becomes a shark in the next round. After all the minnows have either reached the wall or been tagged the shark(s) swim to the other wall and the cycle starts again.

If the some of the minnows refuse to enter the pool, the shark may swim to the other wall and tag it; whoever was still out of the pool when the shark tags the wall becomes a shark. The game is played until all of the minnows have been tagged, then the first person tagged becomes the shark who starts the next round.

Best played in the dark with lots of adults.

There are many different variations to Marco Polo but this one is our favourite.
Best played with four or more players, decide who is to be it. “IT” goes to the shallow end (by the steps) and says 1,2,3, Marco Polo then with their eyes shut (or better still blindfolded) swims (or walks) around the pool trying to catch victims, once a victim is caught they have to be identified by any sense EXCEPT sight (smelling always makes them laugh, making it easier to guess who they are). Then there become variations: The caught person can either join Marco Polo in the hunt working as a team, or get out of the pool and wait until everyone is caught. OR the first person caught is IT.

Can be played with two, but the more the better – same rules as normal volleyball apply.

Get yourself a net (badminton kits are quite cheap and the nets are just about right) and use a parasol or swingball base across the width of the pool to stretch the net across.

Make sure you change ends and remember to use a thick piece of chalk to mark the lines on the water!

If done correctly, this can be great fun for all. You’ll need a CLEAR plastic 2 litre bottle...and a swimming pool.

Make sure the bottle label is entirely peeled off Here’s what you do.

The game leader fills the bottle all the way to the top (with pool water) and puts the cap on tightly. Then the game leader divides the group into two teams. Also, assign each team an “end” of the pool. Finally, a chair is placed on either end of the pool as the goal.

Have the teams lined up on different sides of the pool. The players need to be facing AWAY from the pool WITH their eyes closed. The game leader then throws the bottle into the pool. When it splashes in the pool, players can turn around, open their eyes, and jump in after it! The object is to get the bottle to the other’s teams’ chair (goal). If they can put it in the chair, they get a point. (After each point is scored, the players must exit the pool and change ends, and the game leader starts the second round the same way he/she started the first round.) First team with 3 points wins or for the more competitive, 5 or even 7points.
Here’s the trick, though. The bottle is hard to see if it is totally filled with water! The players are allowed to be “sneaky” with the bottle if they have it. Many times, a team scores while the other team is trying to figure out who has the bottle!

Very good excercise for ALL, this one works especially well in round shaped pools.
Have everybody get in the pool and line up single file, forming a large circle around the edges but where you can all still stand with head above water keeping close together.
Have everyone walk for a couple of minutes, then jog another couple of minutes, then "run" around  another couple of minutes. If done right the water will "carry" them around the pool. Finally, tell them to turn around and go the other way. It is almost impossible to go against the current, so it's a lot of fun to watch them all struggle!
